Posted in 2016 -- MATA33, Lecture Notes by pgadey on 2015/12/17

This blog post contains my notes for MAT A33. It includes links to my lecture notes, practice problems, and some additional references for the curious.

My lectures notes for this week are available here. A compressed PDF file of the lecture notes is available here.

Overview:

  • Introduction to functions of several variables
  • Level curves
  • Partial derivatives

Examples of level curves:

baro-map

A barometric pressure map showing level curves of atmospheric pressure.

topographic map

A topographic map showing the level of curves of height.

Additional references:

In class I used Barbara Kaskosz’s plotting applet available here to plot: x^2 + y^2 and x^2 - y^2. Play around with it! Plot the monkey saddle.

Khan Academy has a collection of videos on thinking about multi-variate functions and partial derivatives.
