Update (2018-06-16): Several people spotted a typo in Question 2.5 of Homework 1. The question read: “Express the vector \vec{i} - 2\vec{j} + 4\vec{j} as a linear combination of \vec{a}, \vec{b}, and \vec{c}”. This was weird because \vec{i} - 2\vec{j} + 4\vec{j} =\vec{i} + 2\vec{j}. The vector in the question has been changed to: \vec{i} - 2\vec{j} + 4\vec{k}.

2016 Term Test: Let A(x,y,z) = \left( \begin{array}{ccc} x& y& z\\ 1& 2& x\\ 0& 3& y\\  \end{array} \right).

  1. Write \det A(x,y,z) as a polynomial.
  2. Define f(x,y,z) = \det A(x,y,z) and find the directional derivative of f at (-1,2,1) in the direction of the normal line to the plane x + 2y + 2z = 0.
